Scott Rotumah

SCOTT ROTUMAHGrowing up at the beach, local rivers and waterholes made Scott into the ocean loving man he is today. A two times indigenous surf champion in 1996 and 1998, and in 1997 coming third place. Paving the way for recognition for indigenous surfers.

Scott has been an artist for over 12 years now, and his coastal heritage is reflected in his art by painting what he sees on a daily basis. The people at Booningbah (place of Echidna) Fingal Heads Northern NSW are lucky enough to have what people consider to be traditional Australian animals such as Kangaroo, Echidnas, Goannas, Koalas etc along with coastal animals such as Platypus, Whales, Dolphins, Turtles, Crabs, Dugongs etc. This gives the Indigenous coastal artists more variety, whilst also incorporating what is left of their stories of the sacred meeting places of his ancestors. Stories passed down the traditional way, from generation to generation.

Being Coastal peoples, their artwork is traditionally more vibrant than what is generally expected of Indigenous art. They have oysters and sea shells which gives them access to more colours of ochre such as blues, pinks, purples, greens which are used among the traditional black, red, browns and oranges.

Alongside his two brothers, who are also Indigenous artists, Scott considers himself a vibrant contemporary artist, although still based on the traditional way of dot painting. He is inspired by his surroundings, his family and his three beautiful children.
